"The Making of the Mahatma" (1996), directed by Shyam Benegal, is a significant film that traces the early journey of Mahatma Gandhi during his 21 years in South Africa a crucial period that laid the foundation for his role in India’s freedom struggle.The film, featuring Rajit Kapur as Gandhi, delves into how his experiences with racial discrimination and injustice abroad shaped his ideologies of Satyagraha (non-violent resistance) and truth, which he later used to lead India's independence movement.The film is not just a biography but a portrayal of how an ordinary man evolved into the Father of the Nation, offering deep insight into the roots of Gandhi’s political and moral philosophy. The movie received the National Film Award for Best Actor (Rajit Kapur as Gandhi) and the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in English in 1996.
